NEW FIRE STATION
Move Goes “Smoothly” The transfer of the Christchurch central fire brigade station from Lichfield street to the new headquarters in Kilmore street went smoothly yesterday, the Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond) reported to the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board last evening “We are more than half, way across.” be said. The first call from the new station was answered yester. day afternoon about 4.30. Mr Osmond said. It was to a warehouse right opposite the old headquarters in Lichfield street; but it was an automatic false alarm. ‘‘Everyone seems quite happy,” Mr Osmond said. “They are bedded down and it augurs well tor the future.”
The dispute over beds in the single men’s quarters is still at Issue between the board and the Christchurch Fire Brigadesmen’s Union, but it did not appear to affect the changeover yesterday. The union secretary (Mr G. G. Walker) could not be found for comment yesterday. He was on a day off, and apparently moved his family furniture to the new station.
The dispute will be discussed at a special meeting of the district council of (he Federation of Labour this evening.
