Secret Pact Report Denied By Formosa

LONDON, Aug. 13 The Nationalist Chinese today officially denied a reported secret agreement with the Chinese Communists on the future of Formosa. An official statement said the responsibility of recovering the mainland “is unmutable and not subject to compromise," the Associated Press reported from Taipeh. The report was described as "another groundless rumour deliberately manufactured by the Chinese Communists.” A London newspaper, the “Observer.” had reported that a secret agreement was concluded between Formosa and China through intermediaries at Hong Kong. The denial, put out in the name of the director of Uie Government Information Office. Mr James Shen, said the Chinese Communists had
renewed this "absurd and groundless rumour” for two reasons. They were
(1) A widespread revolutionary movement against communism and its tyranny has fast taken shape on the mainland. The Chinese Communists are faced with imminent collapse. They hope that rumours of peace will slow or soften the rising popular sentiment against them and permit prolongation of their tyrannical rule. “(2) Following on the heels of the Geneva conference on Laos, illusions of compromise and temporary peace have appeared again.
'The Chinese Communists are taking advantage of this to spread peace rumours and stimulate the forces of appeasement in various countries.
“Their hope is to sow seeds of dissension in the free world and especially to weaken the bonds of solidarity between the Republic of China and the United States,” he said.
