Japan And Australia IN Z.P A .-Reuter—Copyright > TOKYO, Aug. 13 Japanese and Australian officials began preliminary exchanges of views here today for the contdus’on of a new commercial agreement between the two countries. Mr A. T. Carmoday. deputy secretary of the Australian Department of Trade, who arrived here this week, was taking part in the talks Officials said the two parties were merely sounding out each other on the prospects of Australia’s disinvo. cation of the "escape clause” of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade in exchange tor Japan's agreement to inserting provisions for "safeguards” and “sensitive items” in the new agreement. In London the "Daily Telegraph” today reported that demands were growing in some influential official quarters in Australia for closer trade links with Japan in view of the European Common Market threat to Australia's trade. “It is felt that, with the growing exchange of goods and services between the two countries. Japan could probably take the place of Britain as the market for Australian goods if tiie worst happened at the Common Market negotiations.” the “Daily Telegraph's” correspondent in Sydney added.
