(/V .Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 12. Next Wednesday millions of Africans, Asians and coloured (mixed race) people in South Africa will be able to buy ‘‘white man’s liquor’’ legally for the first time in their lives.
The “Johannesburg Post,’’ widely read by Africans, christened it: “D-Day-Drink-For-AU-Day ” To drive the point home, it covered the entire front page of this week’s issue with photographs of bottles of wine, brandy and vodka In the past only specially qualified Africans have been allowed to buy spirits and wine, but they had to produce permits . and were limited to a certain quantity
For the rest —officially— there was Kaffir beer Unofficially, there were the “shebeens" or speakeasies, where shebeen queens brewed potent home-made concoctions Alternatively. Africans had to buy “white" liquor 4t inflated prices from white middlemen. Anticipating next Wednesday. South Africa’s liquor stores are making a rush for new customers, plastering their windows for the first time with advertisements in African languages.
