Lousy Sheep
Sir, —Broom, black alder, tamarisk (Gallicat, hyssop and henbane were listed Culpepper cures for lice, the latter two for external application only. When fields were hedged by these plants did sheep and cattle nibble the shoots of broom and tamarisk and derive protection or immunity from lice? Did their meandering tegs rub among hyssop and henbane rendering them quite inhospitable •to lice? Culpepper says the leaves of black alder (ALnus nigra) are “good fodder for kine to make them give more milk " It might be interesting to know how much of today’s cleaning up of herbs, weeds, shrubs and trees from paddocks has robbed creatures of natural medical aid for health protection and defence from parasites.—Yours, etc, INTRINSIC SUBSTANCE.
