Maria Popovich, the 31-year-old wife of Russia's fourth spaceman, is a pilot in her own right, and once had logged more flying hours dhan her husband. She began to learn to fly when only 16. became a flying school instructress, took part in air parades, did some stunt flying, and by 1958 had logged 800 hours—more than her husband. She was awarded a badge of honour and then joined the staff of a research institute. continuing as a correspondence student of the Civil Air Fleet Institute.
