RELIEF FROM HIGH FEES
Aid For Overseas Students Sought
Dissatisfaction with the conditions under which some overseas students study at New Zealand universities was expressed by delegates to the council of the New Zealand University Students’ Association when it met in Christchurch.
University of Canterbury delegates reported that several of the cases of hardship presented to the executive concerned private overseas students. Similar instances were quoted by delegates of Massey College, where a third Orf the resident students are from overseas.
Delegates said they had noted a difference between the support given to Colombo Plan students and the support given to those entering the country under their own finance
The council approved a remit from the University of Canterbury Association saying that the Government should be convinced that the present severe differentiation between assisted and private overseas students, especially those from the Asian area, was a grievance to the private student which could be alleviated to some degree by relief from high tees upon some academic success.
