Commonwealth University Leaders To Visit City
Fourteen vice-chancellors of leading Commonwealth universities will visit Christchurch next week after attending a meeting in Auckland of the executive of the Association of Universities of the British CommonwealthThey include:—
Dr. J. W. Cook (Exeter University), a noted chemist, who has published numerous papers on organic chemistry, particularly in relation to canoer and hormones;
Sir Ivor Jennings (Cambridge University), one of the leading writers on constitutional law in the Commonwealth. vice-chancellor of the University of Ceylon from 1942 to 1955, and now Downing professor of law at Cambridge; Dr. T. Parry (University College of Wales), a specialist in the study of the Welsh language ana lecturer in Welsh at the University of Bangor from 1929 to 1947; Dr. C. H. Wilson (Glasgow University), a fellow and tutor in modern history at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, from 1939 to 1952, who has written special articles and leading articles for "The Times” and has published several papers on local government;
Professor W. G. Sutton (University of the Witswatersrand), a former president of the South African Institute of Engineers, who is associated with many bodies connected with scientific and industrial research; Sir Douglas Logan (University of London), a jurist who had a distinguished academic career kt Oxford University and is president of the British Universities Sports Board; Dr. J. P. Baxter (University of New South Wales), chairman of the Australian Atomic Energy Committee since 1957 and a former research director of 1.C.1. General Chemicals, Ltd.; Professor R. O. Buchanan (London School of Economics. London University), who was educated at Otago University and taught at the Mount Albert Grammar School before going to London; and Dr. R. B. Madgwick (University of New England). Dr. H. B- Thom (Stellenbosch University), Sir Lindsay Ride (Hong Kong University), Dr. O. A. Ajose (Nigeria), and Mr D. C. Parvate (Karnatak University). While the party is in Christchurch it will take part in a panel discussion and seminar on August 21 on the subject, “What is the Criteria of a Good University?” It is in-
tended that the discussion will cover such topics as the balance between faculties, between residential and nonresidential students, and between teaching and research. On August 22 there will be another panel discussion on the subject of "The Autonomous University, Government Policy, and the Social Need.” This will cover topics such as sources of finance, entrance to the university, problems of sponsored research, academic freedom, and political philosphies.
