UNIVERSITY FESTIVAL

Three Plays Presented

The first three plays of the University Festival of Drama were presented in the Irish Society Hall, last evening. The judge was Mr M. J. Glue

The first play "Three Actors and their Drama” was presented by Otago University. Mr Glue congratulated the group on their choice of play. Initial inaudibility marred the performance at first but as the play progressed the actors became more confident, he said. The second play. “Two Gentlemen of Soho,” a Shakespearean satire by A. P. Herbert, was presented by Massey Agricultural College. An amusing melodrama, it was very well received by the audience. It lacked initial spark, but warmed up progressively. Mr Glue commended Glenda Ferrall for her excellent performance as Laetitia. The "Bonds of Love.” Victoria University’s entry, is a New Zealand play by Bruce Mason. The actors responded very creditably to a play so difficult to perform. "It needed more ‘zing.’ ” said Mr Glue, in his summing up. Many of the lines ‘'missed” a little and the local idiom sounded artificial in many parts It was an ambitious play for amateurs but the sound performances by the actors carried the play reasonably well. The final three plays will be performed on Wednesday night, when placings will be given.
