4 Months On Penhrvn
Life on a Pacific Island was idyUic but after a month it began to get boring, according to Mr P. O’Sullivan, a scientist with the Dominion X-ray and Radium Laboratory, who has returned to New Zealand after spending four months on Penhryn Island.
Mr O'Sullivan was in charge of the monitoring of radioactivity and faU-out from the nuclear tests recently conducted by the United States, and the testing of food samples and rain water
Mr O'Sullivan was one of three Europeans among 800 natives on the island and found much to admire in the friendliness of the natives and the equable approach to life.
There was no work on the island and the natives' only source of income came from the collection of copra and pearl shell. Entertainment w s restricted to ancient films which the natives enjoyed Their favourites were films that showed plenty of killings. fighting, pirates and action. Love scenes and kissing were not popular, he said
