CONDITIONS FOR CREW
“Confirmed Complaints” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. The president of the Seamen’s Union (Mr F. P. Walsh) claimed today that a ministerial statement concerning crew conditions on the Aramoana confirmed his original complaints. The Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine), after inspecting the quarters said he considered them comfortable. He also said a sailor with 20 years’ experience had described them as the best he had seen. But, said Mr Walsh, the Minister had confirmed the cabins had been subject to flooding from the bathrooms, and that the crew’s refrigerator was tod small and would have to be replaced. Mr Walsh said he had at no time criticised the cabins themselves, which he thought were good. The Minister, however, said nothing about the mess room and Mr Walsh believed it was agreed it was not big enough.
