THE BOTANIC GARDENS
For those who explore the various pathways in the Botanic Gardens at present there are numerous plants now coming into flower. In the rock garden there are ericas. Adonis amurensis and crocus, in the woodland across the river the green flowered I’elleborus corsicus may be seen in the Primula garden, the flowering almond and other blossom trees may be seen in various parts, and other plants which may be seen are Hamamelis. Pieris, Acacia. Rhododendron and Camellia. In the south-western corner of the bog garden a specimen of the shrub Cornus mas, or Cornelian cherry is in flower. It is a native of Europe and has been cultivated as a garden plant for several centuries. The small, bright yellow flowers are freely produced on the naked stems and it is particularly valuable as a late winter-flower-ing shrub. It is particularly effective when planted against an evergreen background.
