Sportsman’s Notebook Governor’s Bay Harrier Race Tomorrow
The decision of the Methodist Harrier Club to abandon its Bridle Path race, first held as a centennial event in 1950, for a race from Governor’s Bay to Lyttelton seems wise. Much-improved entries have been received for the new handicap event, tomorrow There are senior and junior sections Ninety-five entries have been received for the senior section in which the two scratch men. J K Macdonald and C. F. Reece (both of Olympic) will be giving away starts of up to 12 minutes The three scratch men in the junior field of 42 runners will be giving the front markers 7min 35sec The back men are C Wood (Methodist), K Jago (Olympic), and C Martin (Christchurch). The runners will set out on their six-mile journey from the Governor’s BayPost Office-store at 2 p.m and it is expected that the first runner will reach the finish of the undulating course, 50 yards short of the Lyttelton Post Office, about 45 minutes later.
Among the senior competitors will be a former track champion. J. B. Parcell, who won the New Zealand one mile title for Canterbury about eight years ago. He will be competing as a member of the Timaru Presbyterian club. ¥ ¥ ¥ N.Z. Test Change The 9st 41b Waikato back R Porteous. has been chosen to replace R. K. Griffiths, of West Coast, in the New Zealand squad from which the New Zealand Rugby League team to play Great Britain omorrow at Auckland will be chosen. Porteous has deserved his selection after a fine game against the tourists for Waikato and again tor a New Zealand XHI in Christchurch last Saturday. Griffiths withdrew because of injury. ¥ ¥ ¥ Rugby Men Honoured Several noted Rugbyadministrators have been created the first honorary
vice-presidents of the South African Rugby Football Union Board. Mr C. S. Hogg, the former chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union’s council and executive, is one and the Australians, Messrs W. Breckenridge and T. McCormack—who have visited New Zealand as managers of Wallaby teams —are others. The remaining men so honoured were Sir Wavell Wakefield, the great English player and administrator, Messrs E. Rees (Wales). S. Hogan (Ireland). W. Ramsay (England). H. Sanderson, H. Roos, and Dr. J. Strasheim (South Africai. ¥ ¥ ¥ Unexpected Call Two Papanui senior Rugby League players—R. Carey, a three-quarters and K. L Pearce, a lock —received an unexpected visit from one of the national selectors, Mr W Telford, of Auckland last Saturday morning less than three hours before the Great Britain-New Zealand XIII match was to start. Mr Telford asked if they would make themselves available for the reserves in the New Zealand team. Both accepted Carey the Thursday before had been a last-minute replacement m the Canterbury team which played the toursts. but Pearce, a 1957 World Cup player, has not represented his province this year
