MARKERS IN LAGOON

Botany Student’s Project

Curious persons will probably be tempted to examine painted iron rods and buoys placed about the Styx estuary and Brooklands lagoon. The University of Canterbury asks members of the public not to tamper with them.

The markers identify areas where records have been made of plankton and algae in the lagoon. This research has been undertaken during the last 18 months by a botany student, Mr M. Ratnasaibapathy, to provide material for a thesis. He will be finished in a few weeks but the department wishes the markers to be permanent, as other students will continue this work. Professor W. R. Philipson, head of the botany department at the university, said that research had been hampered by interference with markers and stations.
