PUSHED MAN INTO CANAL
Certificate For Saving (NX. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, August 5. A man named as a hero for saving a friend from a canal has admitted that he had pushed him in, said the “Daily Mirror.” The hero is the Rugby League forward, Mr Ted Brophy, aged 28, who is to get a Royal Humane Society’s certificate for rescuing the Rugby League international player, Dick Huddart, from the canal at Leigh, Lancashire. Mr Huddart was now touring New Zealand, said the newspaper. The “Daily Mirror” said Mr Broiphy and Mr Huddart had called at the Bridge-Water Inn, Leigh. When they came out the battery of Mr Huddart’s van was flat. Mr Brophy said: “While I was pushing the van, the engine kept stopping and starting . . . suddening the engine fired and the van went straight forward into the canal. I was amazed.” A police spokesman commented last night: "A man's life was in danger and Mr Brophy risked his own to rescue him.” The award is to be presented next week.
