Nelson Beats Coast, 6-3 (N.Z. Press Association) GREYMOUTH, Aug. 5. The West Coast hope of making a good showing In their Ranfurly shield challenge later this month received a set-back! on Rugby Park. Greymouth, this afternoon. They saw their previously un-: beaten season’s record go by 1 the board when they lost the i Seddon shield to Nelson, 6-3. ' Nelson had the better of the exchanges in the scoreless first half. Keping the ball mainly in the forwards, they threatened the Coast line several times, but resolute defence kept the challengers out. The first points came with seven minutes gone in the second spell. The Nelson fullback. N. Delaney, who had missed five attempts beforehand sent his sixth penalty kick true. With 10 minutes to go, Delaney fielded a clearing kick outside the Coast twenty-five and drop-kicked a neat goal. The game looked in safe keeping for Nelson, but Coast made a late rally and with five minutes left the winger. B. Brown, scored in the corner. The other winger, J. Eathorae, missed the kick and Nelson held out. The referee was Mr D. Hawkes (Marlborough). Civic Welcome

The Garrison Band turned out and a civic welcome was given by the Mayor (Mr S. I. Russell) when the Nelson team arrived in Nelson with the shield late this afternoon.

In spite of bleak conditions a crowd of between 300 and 400 packed the bandroom to hear the captain, J. Wilson, and his team, receive the congratulations of the Mayor and the president of the Nelson union (Mr R. A. Mace). For the final 25 miles of the return journey from Greymouth. the team's bus. escorted by a fleet of cars, passed through scattered groups of waving people. Nelson last held the shield in 1960. They will face the challenge of the Marlborough team next Saturday. Northland Win 32-8 (N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, August 5. Northland beat Golden BayMotueka by 32 to 8 at Kaltaki today. Rain last night and showers this morning made the field rather sloppy. At halftime. Northland led 19-5. In the second half, Golden Bay was able to add only three points. They lost the half-back, E. Colman, and a forward. P. Fry. through injuries. Replacements were R. Collins and B Thistle. S"orer« for Northland were V- Yates (3). E. J. Thompson, p, Keatley. P. Marshall, and T. H. Ross, tries; M. Walters four conversions and a penalty. For Golden Bay-Motueka. K. Hoskin and E. Pomery scored tries, and W. McCaa kicked a conversion.
