TRANSFER OF LICENCES
Safeguard Sought For Citizens (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 3. Concern over the tendency in certain licensing legislation to over-ride the rights of citizens to protect themselves through the ballot box against the operation of the licensed liquor trade, was expressed at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Alliance. On the question of transfer of a hotel licence from one district to another, it was contended the people in the area without a licence should have the right at the outset to say whether or not they wanted a licence. A site poll did not serve this purpose. The meeting decided to seek an appropriate amendment to that section of the 1961 Licensing Act which was claimed swept aside the rights of objection by the people against the transfer of a hotel licence to their district.
