Pipi Beds
Sir, —If “Rip van Winkle” wishes to know the cause of the disappearance of pipis. he should go to New Brighton in summer. At low tide there are people taking pipis by the bucketful or sugarbag, as far as can be seen along the beach. Some eat them: others, wanting bait for fishing. take many times more than they need, and instead of returning the surplus to the water, abandon them or) hot sand or rocks to be wasted. The regular angler takes two dozen: the occasional one takes 200. Also, I believe that during the past two summers, pipis have been advertised as bait throughout the South Island. Although feed is apparently plentiful, judging by the size of the pipis, no bed, however extensive, can stand such attrition. Ten years ago the beds were 50 yards wide; last summer they were less than five yards wide.—Yours, etc., ANGLER. August 1, 1962.
