TROTTING Smoke Screen Joins D. J. Townley’s Tinwald Team

Smoke Screen is the latest addition to 1). J. Townley’s Tinwald team. Formerly trained at Rangiora by his owner, F. P. Watson. Smoke Screen will probably resume racing at the New Brighton Trotting Club's spring meeting on September 1.

A six-year-old gelding by Smokey Hanover from Early Van, Smoke Screen has created a good impression in the little racing he has had. He had 10 starts last season for three wins and four placings. If he comes up as well as expected this season, he could develop worth while form.

! Smoke Screen’s most recent win was in the Redwood .Handicap at Nelson in Jannary. He gave away starts of i up to 36 yards and ran out i a very easy winner over Bonr.leburn. Smoke Screen (became awkwardly placed In 'the handicaps as a result of . that minor win and in his other two appearanaces last (season he had to give away big starts in outsized fields. iHe will have to contend with : his awkward mark in future. : but roomy tracks such as I New Brighton, Ashburton I and Methven should suit him and he should not be long ‘ graduating to a more suit- | able handicap. j Townley will also have Mtnnow and Storm Water to i represent him at the two ‘New Brighton meetings next month. Mir.now, which I might also race at Addington this month if she makes satisfactory progress, showed , useful form last season, although she disappointed a | little in some of her last few |i starts. She showed useful form in many of her races and might not be long winning again. i Storm Water, another former Southland performer, failed to win a race last season although he was placed J in many races. He joined Townley s team and has re- | mained with h.m during the i winter. He. too. is on an ; awkward handicap mark, bu» at times he has raced well enough to suggest an early win. Townley is also handling a i number of young pacers, inI eluding a three-year-old filly by Stormy way from Lucky Diana, an unraced sister to i Spaxton. A three-year-old I gelding by Young Charles ’ from Perfection is a halfbrother to Perfect Scott and ! is closely related to Haughty and other outstanding performers. A two-year-old filly by Highland Air from Belle Jean fLuckv Jack—Fantine l , a two-year-old colt by Young Charles and a three-year-old filly by Widow-er Scott are (other young pacers in work ' at present. At Riccarton i All Bey, which was purchased towards the end of

last season by the president of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club. Mr 1.. S Smart, is being prepared for him at Riccarton by J. S. Shaw. Ali- Bey. which raced first as a pacer, showed considerable promise in the little racing he had as a trotter last season. Dark Lorene Dark Lorene. a winner in strung company at Addington in April, is being prepared for the national meeting by J. L Ferguson at Tinwald Dark Lorene has become most solid in the last 12 months and she could be one of tire big winners at her gait in the next six months. She is better than many of her rivals in winter conditions and could strike a track to suit in the next fewweeks. To Resume Abu Simbel, which has been away from racing since he finished third to Medoro Star and Lucks Way at Forbury Park in May. 1961. will probably reappear in the next few weeks. He has been back in work with J. L. Behms at Chertsey for some time. Abu Simbel showed great promise when he joined Behrns’s team as a five-year-old He had 20 3“arts and recorded four wins and six placings He is a seven-vear-old gelding by Bill B. from Karnak, the dam also of Scimitar. Skean Dhu and Temple Folly. Back In Work Sally Boy. which had to be put aside af er gaining a

runaway win over Flying Note and Master .Alan at the end of two miles in the Spring Handicap on New Zealand Cup day last November. is making rapid progress in preparation for resuming racing at Addington later this, month. The Garrison Hancver six-year-old is one of the most highly-regarded pacers in commission. Unfortunately he has been dogged by ligament trouble in the last 18 months. This is reported to have responded well to treatment and if he stands up to racing it will not surprise if he gains the three wins necessary to qualify him for the New Zealand Cup in November. Long Absence Notify and Guiliano, both of which have had a long absence from racing, are now being trained at Yaldhurst by W. M. Denton. Notify, a seven-year-old gelding by U. Scott from Regal Parade, is owned by Mr N. V. Bee. of Oamaru. He has not raced since he finished third to Schnapps and Master Alan in the Esplanade Handicap at New Brighton in March. 1961. Notify will only have to remain sound to be a worthwhile winner. Guiliano, an eight-year-old gelding by Medoro from Ladv Ardee. showed great oromise early in his career, but recurring soreness restricted his career. He has been off the scene since October. 1959. His last win was at Greymcuth in 1959. when he beat Resistor in the Royal Oak Handicap If Guiliano remains sound he. too. could return to fine form.
