ALLOWANCE ON TRIP
Cut For “Miss N.Z.” (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Aug. 1, Maureen Kingi, “Miss New Zealand,” has had her allowance for the United States cut by almost 100 dollars. Mr J. Brown for the contest promoter described her as, “the best advertisement the country has ever had” and said the action of the Reserve Bank ivas a piece of “bureaucratic nonsense.” He applied for £l5O allowance for Miss Kingi, who will spend 19 days in America. She is entered in the “Miss International” contest at Long Beach, California, and will undertake a week-long good-will tour after it. “Maureen will be working for the whole country in promoting New Zealand publicity,” Mr Brown said. “Yet she has been classed only as an ordinary traveller and been allowed £ll5. “Other contestants will have as much money as they can afford, while our representative will have only this bare amount.
“She will be appearing on television before millions of Americans and inviting them to come to New Zealand," he said. “How many of them would come if they were allowed less than living expenses to bring with them?”
