Canterbury Suggestion On Name Of Kent University

LONDON, July 19.
The vice-chancellor of the University of Canterbury has asked that the new University of Canterbury. Kent, should not have the same name, “The Times” reported today. Two universities of the same name would lead to a loss of identity and to embarrassment at meetings of officials of Commonwealth universities, the newspaper said. It was believed assurances had been given New Zealand officials that the sponsors of the new university would respect their views. An official at the New Zea-
land High Commissioner’s Office said hints that a title other than the University of Canterbury should be chosen had come from New Zealand as “a mild suggestion.” The clerk to the Canterbury (Kent) Council and one of the university sponsors. Mr J. Boyle, denied the sponsors were being forced to change their minds. “It was not to be called the University of Canterbury. No decision has been made." he said.
“Canterbury is not a place that stands on its dignity. We regard substance more than form. We feel satisfaction at having a university at Canterbury.”
