Rowing COXED DOUBLE SCULLS
Abolition Of Event
Expected
Expecting the abolition of the double sculls coxed class at a national level, the executive of the Canterbury Rowing Association last night expressed it* desire to remove the class from the local scene. It passed a resolution to this effect and decided to advise regatta committees and clubs not to include such events on their programmes or to buy boats for coxed double sculling. Mr E. R. Lindstrom, who introduced the matter, said Hie class was going out. Nowhere else in the world were double sculls rowed as coxed events, he said. Referring to an Auckland remit on the subject to be placed before the annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association, Mr W. G. Richards said that if the class was to be eliminated from national programmes, it would be foolish for Canterbury to continue with coxed double sculling. The meeting discussed a suggested programme for 1962-83. drawn up by a three-man subcommittee When details of the tides for the season are available, a further meeting will be held to complete the programme. Tlte convener of the subcommittee (Mr B. G. Knight) proposed the holding of a mixed eights over three-quar-ters of a mile on November 17. It was hoped to encourage novice oarsmen by the holding of this event, and to thia end each crew should have at'least four novices in its number, he said. Mr *E. R. McCalman suggested that the event should be known as the initiation eights. The secretary (Mr R. B. Richards) advised the meeting of his transfer to Hamilton, to * a . k ® in September. Mr Richards has held the position since the association’s last annual meeting.
