University Beaten By Lincoln Coll.
The Lincoln College Rugby team, which struggled hard to gain an uninspiring onepoint win against one of the lower placed sides in the senior reserve grade last Saturday, confounded all predictions by triumphing, If against the senior championship winner. University, in the colleges’ annual match at the Tai Tapu Domain yesterday.
If Lincoln’s form of last Saturday was its most disappointing. yesterday’s was undoubtedly its most encouraging. It seized the. initiative at the start and, in 15 minutes of vigorous attacking play, threw University hard on defence and gained a lead of eight points. In the second half. University brought its full might to bear on the Lincoln side With the All Black, R. C Moreton. as its trump card on attack, University scored three splendid back ’tries but the tiring Lincoln players clung resolutely to their rapidly diminishing lead to gain a well-merited win.
The main playing field at the domain was in grand order for the match, which was watched by a disappointingly small crowd. The teams were:—
Lincoln College: J. Keoghan; N. G. Gow, D. A. Ivory. P Houghton; R. A. Rikys (captain). W. John Thompson; K Wright; J. Bryon; C. Dougherty W James Thompson. F. D. Eggleton, W. Kain; D Elvidge, B. Francis. J. J. Scott. Canterbury University: T. J Morris; J. D. Pask. R. J. Vivian. D. J. Davidson: R. C. Moreton. M. J Summerfield; A. T. Calder; T. H Moynihan (captain); W
Wakelin, D. P. Gaffikin, C. R. Hockley, P. G. Bark; G. G Loveridge. I. Withell. A. Davies. Lincoln's early successes—a converted try in the third minute and a penalty goal 10 minutes later—put the side in great heart. It gained further encouragement from a fine 50yard kick with which Keoghan kicked another penalty later in the half. The chief barriers to Lincoln’s progress were tthe cool brilliance of Morris, the University’s full-back, and the superior rucking of the University forwards. The occasions on which Lincoln forwards, in full cry. took the ball into a ruck and lost it were numerous. Hockley. Loveridge and the captain. Moynihan, played vital roles in this respect and the team’s line-out play, built round the tall Gaflikin, also produced a good supply of the ball. But in scrummaging Lincoln came into its own. Francis, a most useful forward apart from his quick striking, won six heels against the head to one bv Withell. Loose Forwards Excel Lincoln’s loose forwards, headed by Kain, gave the University first five-eighths. Stvimerfield. little chance to settle down. Moreton. outside him. was closely watched—which was as well, for two of University’s tries came from his swiftly executed breaks. He ran strongly and passed well at every opportunity but accomplished some of his most valuable work on defence. He extracated University from several dangerous situations. There was much to admire in the play of both full-backs. Morris and Keoghan. and in the determination of the tiring Lincoln forwards in the closing stages of the game. Eggleton’s playing under the handicap of a deep-seated bruise on the left leg typified this effort. For Lincoln. Wright scored a try and Keoghan kicked three penalty goals and a conversion Vivian <2i and Summerfield scored tries for University Morris converting one. Mr R. Rose was the referee
