Farmers Want Local Cement Used
(New Zealand Press Association)
INVERCARGILL, July 11
The executive of Southland Federated Farmers has lodged a protest against the decision of Dalgety and New Zealand Loan Company, Ltd., to use cement from the Westport Cement Company for building a large wool store instead of Southland Cement Company cement. The store, on the north road, will cover five acres. The reason why the company is using the Westport company’s cement is because it is distributing agent throughout New Zealand for that product. When the matter was brought to the notice of the executive of the federation it
decided on immediate action and a telegram was sent to Mr P. Sisam, of Wellington, general manager in New Zealand for Dalgety and New Zealand Loan Company. Ltd.
Later a statement was issued on behalf of the company. This said that as distributors for the Westport company, Dalgety and New Zealand Loan Company would be in an awkward position if it did not use the cement that it distributed. It did not distribute the cement of any other company. The provincial secretary of Federated Farmers (Mr L. C. Brown) said that members of the provincial executive of the federation were unanimous in their desire to see local industry used for local projects.
The executive appreciated that Dalgety and New Zealand Loan distributed for the Westport Cement Company, but thought that at least 50 per cent. of Southland cement might have been used in the building.
