THREE ONE-ACT PLAYS
Elmwood Players’ Presentation
The tone of the entertainment presented by the Elmwood Players in their latest programme of one-act plays is rather more serious than usual. This is, no doubt, an advantage for the actors, who are gaining valuable experience; but to the audience certain scenes appeared beyond the capabilities of those who attempted them. This was noticeable in the first play, "This Boy Connor,” in which dramatic situations came thick and fast. Chris Joyce's greater experience in dramatic work showed up here; and Wayne McClurg in the leading role of Robbie made something of the part as he settled down to it. Francis Pattinson was Tania, a role that proved to be smaller than at first seemed likely. As Midge, Peter Worley made an unimpressive beginning, but tended to dominate the latter scenes of the play. Glennis Paine's attempt to manage the difficult part of Smudge was a brave one in the circumstances. The second play, “Myself When Young,’’ had a curious theme. A middle-aged woman’s younger selves appeared before her. Their aim was to express their dissatisfaction with what had happened to them and to her. Ella Young gave a capable performance as Margaret, and Linda Lyttle, whose part was demanding, was also good. Others appearing in this play were Meryle McClurg. Jill Madden, Sandra McClurg, Miai Willets, and Betty Surridge. Comic relief was supplied by “I Spy." an involved oneacter dealing with the troubles of a private detective. Alex Aitchison sustained the character of the pertinacious Mr Frute with real understanding of the humour of the situation. Judy Perrot, too, acted in a simple, natural style that suited the part of Mrs Morgian very well. The scenes in the lawyer’s office were played to give some contrast with what was taking piece at the seaside hotel; and here Brian Taylor brought out the eccentricity of Captain Morgan in a lively performance. The Elmwood Players will present these plays at their theatre in Fulton avenue every evening for the remainder of the week. —C.E.S.
