President Of Liberia
(N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, July 11
The Queen yesterday carried an umbrella for President Tubman, of Liberia, who arrived in London for a three-day State visit. President Tubman, whose African nation was founded by slaves from the Southern States of America returning to Africa, is the Queen's guest at Buckingham Palace. Steady rain dampened the arrival of the President and Mrs Tubman. However, in company with the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, they travelled in open landaus in the ceremonial drive from Victoria Station to Buckingham Palace.
During the drive the President asked the Queen if he might wear his top hat in the downpour, according to the “Daily Telegraph." The Queen said: “Do, indeed,” and then unrolled her umbrella and held it over both of them. The Duke held his own umbrella over Mrs Tubman in the second landau.
