Handicap A cigarette butt caused an incident in the British Open golf championship at Troon yesterday, according to the "Daily Sketch.” The United States Open champion, Jack Nicklaus, found a smouldering butt immediately behind his ball in a bunker at the twelfth. Nicklaus was refused permission to move it. and after his round he checked up on the rule—and discovered he was right. He said: "A cigarette end is a man-made object and therefore artificial and ■ can be moved. It's only objects which are natural, made by God, which you are not allowed to move."—(London, July 10.) Tree-Line Studies Studies to try to discover why the tree-line in the Rocky Mountains in the western United States is round about 10.000 ft. whereas in New Zealand at similar latitudes the trees go only to i between 3000 ft and 5000 ft. are to be carried out in America by Dr. P. Wardle, of the Botany Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Lincoln. Dr. Wardle has been awarded a Fulbright travel grant to enable him to take up a grant from the United States Forest Service to join the staff of the University of Colorado, Boulder, for one year. He will leave Christchurch with his wife and family on August 14. Dr. Wardle was formerly on the staff of the New’ Zealand Forest Service. He has been studying the New Zealand sub-alpine vegetation for some years. New Fire Station The new central fire station in Kilmore street should be ready for occuptaion at the end of this month, the building sub-committee advised the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board last evening. August 2 or 3 was the tentative date for shifting, the Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond) said. August 25 was suggested as a tentative date for the official opening. Preachers Qffered “I urge ministers to take advantage of this offer. It will be a fine thing to have our Methodist brethren speak m our churches." said the Rev. M. W. Wilson at a meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery last evening, when a letter from the i Methodist Church offering preachers at Presbyterian churches during the conference in November was received. Misdirected At least one man. unfamiliar with the lay-out of Christchurch, had difficulty in finding the meeting-place of the Canterbury branch of the Economic Society of Australia and New Zealand last evening, which was addressed by Mr P. B Marshall. chairman of the Dairy Production and Marketing Board. The branch met in a cqmmonroom at the University of Canterbury Students’ Union building—which was described on the notice of the meeting as being "at the corner of Hereford street and Gloucester street,” (The man had to go and look up a street map to find the university’s location.) “Outlook” Promotion A promotion campaign for the Presbyterian magazine “Outlook” would be held in September, the Rev. R. L. Smith, convener of the information committee, told a meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery last evening. Expenditure of up to £25 from Presbytery funds for publicity purposes was approved. Garlic Scarce Locally-grown garlic was scarce in Christchurch produce markets yesterday and sold for up to 4s a pound. It is selling for 6d an ounce in the shops which is almost double the usual price. Cheviot rhubarb was in good supply, selling for 18s to 23s a dozen bunches in the markets. and for up to 2s 3d a bunch in the shops. Fire Calls The Christchurch Fire Brigade answered 123 calls in June, compared with 116 in June of last year. There were 50 property fires. 11 chimney fires, and 10 herbage. Twenty-six false alarms were automatic. 21 justifiable and five malicious.
