S.I. TEAM

15 Canterbury Nominations

Canterbury has nominated 15 players for the South Island team to play the North Island at Lancaster Park on July 28. The players are:— Backs.—W. F. McCormick (Linwood). P. G. Morrissey (Old Boys', W. Birtwistle (Christchurch), D. Stephens (Linwood'. D. Arnold (Christchurch), R. C. Moreton (University). B. A. Watt (Christchurch), and B. A. Coulter (Marist). Forwards. D. Young (Shirley), J. M. Le Lievre (Country), M. W. Allen (University), M. G. Murtagh (Christchurch), D. J. Graham (Old Boys), A. J. Stewart (University), and R. Abel (Linwood).

Unusual aspects are the preference for Stewart, who was a reserve for the game against Wellington, over R. G. Cochrane (Country), who locked the Canterbury scrum last Saturday with Abel, and the nomination of three wings. Morrissey, Birtwistle, and Stephens. Watt has an ankle injury which will keep him out of the game for another week at least; but. if he is fit, by July 28 he must be first choice for first five-eighths. Moreton, too. must be a favourite for second five-eighths or centre.

With the exception of Murtagh. Coulter. Stephens and Birtwistle, all the players were nominated for the South Island All Black trials in May
