£8½m Allotted To School Building
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. July 5. The Government had provisionally allotted a sum of £8,500,000 for the 1962-63 school building programme, said the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) today.
“This sum will meet expenditure in the primary, post-primary. and related fields." said Mr Tennent. “It does not include provision for university buildings for which, as I announced some Lime ago. a separate allocation of £1.750.000 has been made. With university expenditure included, the sum allotted for education buildings this year is £10.250.000 £IJ million more than last year. “The school building programmes. besides providing for extensions needed at existing schools, includes 46 new primary and 13 new intermediate schools and a number of new post-primary schools The Government has announced the letting of a contract for the new teachers' college at Hamilton, and the proposals for new colleges at Wellington and Auckland. “We are still faced with a continually expanding school population to be provided
for and our effort in the present year must be to ensure that the provision of essential school building is maintained. However. £250.000 of the allocation is provided for the replacement of outmoded or obsolete buildings. “Details of the individual works will be given as they are approved. In the meantime. education boards are being authorised to proceed o i the usual basis with thc.r building programmes.” sa.d Mr Tennent.
