Kennedy Urges Atlantic Partnership

(N.Z. Press Association-^Copyright)

PHILADELPHIA, July 4. One hundred thousand people cheered a Fourth of July pledge by President Kennedy today to strive for a "concrete Atlantic partnership’’ for peace and freedom with the emerging union of Europe. The United States would be prepared to discuss with Europe “a mutually beneficial partnership” which ultimately could achieve “a world of law and free choice, banishing the world of war and coercion,” said Mr Kennedy. A united Europe would be a partner with which the United States could deal on a basis of full equality in all the great and burdensome tasks of building and defending a community of free nations. "Building the Atlantic partnership will not be cheaply or easily finished,” the President declared in an Independence Daj- address prepared for delivery to the annual conference of State Governors. The United States, acting on its own, could not establish justice throughout the world, meet common defence and other needs. But, joined

with other free nations, it could do all this and more. .“We can assist the developing nations to throw off the yoke of poverty. We can balance our world-wide trade and payments at the highest possible level of growth," he said.
