TRIED TO GET THERE
(New Zealand Press Association)
NELSON, June 27. Weather and mishaps caused the cancellation of an election meeting which was to have been addressed by the DeputyPrime Minister (Mr Marshall) at Motueka tonight. The departure from Wellington airport, on a N.A.C. flight was in doubt until just before midday because of bad weather nt Nelson. However, it cleared, and the flight, due to arrive at Nelson at 12.35 p.m., left only a little behind schedule. The aircraft, however, developed a mechanical fault and returned to Wellington. In the meantime Wellington airport had closed and Mr Marshall went to Papaparaumu to join a plane to Nelson. The plane had left Paraparaumu in mid-afternoon when both Nelson and Blenheim airfields closed.
The plane put down at Rongolai which, at this stage, was again open. National Party organisers were standing by at Nelson to make a rush trip to Blenheim if necessary to bring the Minister through to Motueka. However, with the weather deteriorating it was decided to cancel the meeting.
