COCKTAIL BOOTS
High Fashion At Fair Footwear of all nations, ranging from Eskimo mukluks to high-fashion Canadian cocktail boots, will be on display at the New Zealand shoe and leather fair in Christchurch from July 31 to August 2. The fair, to be held in the Winter Garden, will be the biggest specialised exhibition ever held in New Zealand. Forty-eight exhibitors will be represented, most of them footwear manufacturers, tanners, and supply houses for the footwear trade. The fair will be officially opened by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) at 8.15 p.m. on July 31. The New Zealand Footwear Manufacturers’ Federation and the New Zealand Tanners’ Association are organising the fair. Their last exhibition—in Auckland in 1959 —was attended by 30,000 persons. The display of footwear of all nations, one small part of the fair, may include the boots worn by the American astronaut, John Glenn. The organisers have written to the United States, asking for the loan of these boots for an exhibit The Canadian cocktail boots, however, will probably interest women a good deal more. Although called "boot*," they have stiletto heels, and are lined with mink fur. A second attraction—to the public at large—will be free entry to the fair, and a third, a "give-away,” as the organisers term it, of £lOOO worth of footwear and leather goods. The fair will also show an extensive range of both men's and women’s fashion footwear, all currently manufactured in New Zealand.
