Salk Predicts New Vaccine Mixtures
(N.Z. Press Association—< Copyright) NEW YORK. June 24. Dr. Jonas Salk, who developed the poliomyelitis vaccine named after him, today predicted that it may some day be possible to eliminate cancer by means of an all-purpose vaccine to control all the viruses that attack the human body.
There was good reason to believe that viruses caused cancer and the way to fight the disease was to attempt
to immunise man from all viruses that affected him. Dr. Salk said in a television interview.
"It may be a shotgun approach. but it may be the only way," he said, according to the Associated Press He said he had isolated cancer viruses in animals but not in human beings, which he said, might mean either that there were no cancer viruses in man or that they disappeared. "A virus can trigger the cancerous processes, and then disappear when the cancer becomes full-blown," he said Dr. Salk said thait one shot attacked three types of poliomyelitis virus, that influenza vaccine controlled several viruses and that one innoculation controlled both diphtheria and whooping cough viruses. "As time goes on, we will see measles added on, and others ... at an accelerated rate." he said. ’’Where we now put three viruses in a single shot, it would not be difficult to go to 10, and then to 30, and then to 100.” Khrushchev leaves INZ.
