Rusk Meets Home For E.E.C. Talks

LONDON, June 25. The United States Secretary of State (Mr Dean Rusk) today was meeting the British Foreign Secretary (Lord Home) for important talks on future developments in the Atlantic alliance. The main factor in their survey is likely to be
Britain’s entry into the Common Market and its effect on vital policy issues like nuclear strategy. European defence, and world trade. Mr Rusk, who is on a 10-day tour of European states, last night began his visit to London with a private meeting with the Prime Minister (Mr Macmillan). Later, the two went to a working dinner given by Lord Home, and attended by top officials, including Mr Edward Heath, Britain’s chief Common Market negotiator. E.F.T.A, Difficulty British officials say Lord Home is expected to raise the question of United States opposition to associating Britain’s neutral partners in the European Free Trade Area (E.FT.A) with the Common Market. Lack of suitable arrangements for Sweden. Austria and Switzerland could make British entry more difficult, observers said. In a speech on his arrival at London Airport yesterday. Mr Rusk said: "I have had a very busy visit to Paris. Berlin. Bonn and Rome, and I am very satisfied indeed with the discussions I have had in those capitals. “Now we want to go over a great many questions with Lord Home and other officials There are a great many questions in which we are involved all over the world and there is a lot of discussion going on in N ATO, these days and I think everyone ought to know what it is about." Mr Rusk added: "I was deeply reassured by the solidarity and the unity of the alliance on these basic security matters with which we- are associated in the N A.T.O. alliance."
