The Japanese newspaper “Asahi Shimbun” said yesterday that the Japanese Government hoped to conclude a commerce and navigation agreement with Britain, involving textiles, by the end of next month, the British United Press reported Quoting informed sources, the report said Japan and Britain had almost agreed on the protective provisions which Britain had proposed should be inserted in the treaty as the condition for its ceasing to apply the escape clause of G.A.T.T. (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade). “As a protective measure, the British negotiators have proposed the designation of •watch items' for textiles and other highly competitive Japanese products, which are considered likely to cause injury to the British industries. to restrict the influx of those goods by establishing a yearly import limit," the report said.
