Table Tennis B. A. Foster And Miss Inglis Win Singles Titles

B. A. Foster, of Dunedin's North-east Valley Club, and Miss F. Inglis, of Avonsdde, Won tihe men's and women's singles titles respectively when the Canterbury tabie tennis j championships were held over the week-end. In the finals they defeated last year’s champions. J Armstrong and Mrs J. Shadbolt, both of the Eagles club. Foster, who represented New Zealand at the world championships in Peking last season, recorded one of his most comfortable victories over Armstrong in the men’s singles final. These players have met in many tournaments and representative matches in recent seasons, with Armstrong perhaps holding a slight edge in the number of victories. In yesterday's final, however, there was no doubt as to who was the better player on the day. After Armstrong had led in the early stages, Foster jumped into top form in the middle of the first game. He made good use of the loop drive, which is the fashionable shot to use against defensive players. Armstrong handled this quite well, and his returns were only slightly above the net. Against any other player, this would not have mattered, but Foster was in stich good attacking form that he was often able to hit away clean winners from balls which appeared perfectly safe. In the second game Armstrong soon found himself trailing, 8-16, but pulled his game together to recover to 17-20 before Foster took the game with an edge ball. Here Armstrong hit some good attacking shots, but in general he must have felt betrayed by his forehand, which had served him so well in representative matches on the previous week-end.

The third game was again all Foster, as the Otago champion slashed his way through a defence which, unusually for Armstrong, looked a little suspect. The Canterbury player did not have his usual assurance with his returns, but it was a good display by Foster, who appears to be playing particularly well at this stage of the season. Foster, .in his semi-final,

disposed of the young Wellington player, W. N. Evans, in good style. This was a most, attractive game, with Evans hitting hard on occasions, and giving as well as he got witn tne loop forehand. In Foster he found an opponent who was just a little too quick and too Sound .n his pusning play. Armstrong was ~ui troubled to dispose of R. L, Foster in the other semi-final, and the elder Foster snowed no confidence in his shots at all. Earlier Foster had beaten N. V. Brightwell in a close match, showing much better form.

Hard Struggle Evans hau a hara struggle before overcoming me caauenge ot T. ft. L>. Eant tn a quarterfinal meeting, runt, wno lost to Evans in a representative matcn in tne preceding week-end, mixed his game to good eliect. His counter-attack was particularly effective, but in the closing stages he wilted before the solid ail-round emciency of his younger opponent.

In another quarter-final. Canterbury's K. F. Stevenson achieved the distinction of taking the only game from B. A. Foster during the singles competition. Stevenson partnered Foster to win the New Zealand boys' doubles title several seasons ago.

Women's Singles Miss Inglis showed very good form to win the final of the women's singles. Sne is the popular and hard-working secretary of the Canterbury Table Tennis Association. Miss Inglis's form so far this season had not been consistent, but in this final she gave a good all-round display. Her defence carried a lot of spin, and on many occasions Mrs Shadbolt, usually very sure in her attack was tempted into hitting errors. When she received a chance to attack. Miss Inglis dispatched the ball at a terrific speed with her forehand. Mrs Shadbolt, unfortunate in having to defend her title against an opponent in such outstanding form, could do little but hope to pick up points from Miss Inglis’s errors Earlier Miss Inglis had plaved well to eliminate the secondseeded Miss V. Braumann of Otago, and she has probably played her way back into the South Island side, and perhaps back onto the national ranking list.

The brothers Foster were not seriously troubled to retain their title in the men’s doubles Their opponents, Brightwell and Flint, are a solid combination but were unable to match the winners for power. Flint has won this title on nine occasions. the first in 1946, and Brightwell has recorded seven victories.

Several of the younger Canterbury players acquitted themselves well in thi§ tournament. D. J. Kalin and P J. Wylie leached the last 16 in the men’s singles, with tile former fully extending the seeded N. B. Radford. H. P. Holt gave Flint a hard struggle before going down in four games. In the women’s section Miss H. Elia confirmed her promise by beating Mrs J. Brown in the final of the bracelet. Mrs Brown is a former Canterbury representative

D. T. Mcßride comfortably defeated P. Ives in the under-18 boys’ final, but Ives had his consolation when he took the under-16 title. Mcßride in hi s semi-final struggled to defeat the South Island under-16 champion P. Grainger. Misses J. Rich. S. Manning and J. Goodchap were three junior girls who showed their ability. Miss Manning, recently arrived from Marlborough, defeated Miss Goodchap in a semi-final, and went down to Miss Rich only after a most entertaining match in the final. Miss Rich has played in the senior representative team with distinction. Miss Goodchap showed that she was in a class of her own in the under-16 section.
