Immigration
Sir,—ln yesterday’s issue is an advertisement, ‘“nomination required by skilled English farm worker.” I am under the impression that assisted passages for farm workers have been cancelled, in which case It is obviously a waste of time to answer such advertisements. Can you request the immigration Department to state what the position is, in case my surmise is correct? —Yours, etc.. FARMER. June 1. 1962. IThe Acting Minister of Immigration <Mr D. C. Seath) said: "The present position is that the assisted passage immigration scheme is open to certain classes of skilled tradesmen and farm workers with not more than two dependent children. It would appear from the information supplied by your correspondent that the advertiser in your publication is seeking a guarantee of employment and accommodation from some farmer who is at present seeking labour. The recruitment of farm workers has always been given a high degree of priority under the immigration scheme.”!
