The Estuary
Sir.—May I commend Cr. Skellerup on his interest in the appearance and utility of the Estuary as a public asset? The ““my-advice-is-to-leave-iit-alone” attitude of Cr. Oonnal does net really belong to this year. 1962. The Drainage Board is doing excellent work; but if the board's operations affect, by means of silting, etc., an already exiistiing aquatic playground, then we should be able to expect an attitude such as expressed by Cr. Skellerup instead of the rather traditional. anaesthetic attitude of the past.—Yours, etc., RATEPAYER. June 22. 1962.
Sir. —Cr. G. A. Connal’s advice to leave the Estuary ■alone is typical of the un. progressive thinking of many members of the Drainage Board. Over the past 20 or 30 years successive boards have done just that. The proposal to tell the public just where their control of the Estuary begins and ends is an excellent one and, as Cr. Skellerup said, the Drainage Board has too much on its plate to worry about the Estuary except as an outlet tor its effluent. In my opinion he should have gone even further, and advocated a separate authority to control the Estuary—an auth. ority with the power to rate and do the necessary work. All candidates for office on both the council and the board should be asked to staite where they stand in this regard so that we know whom to vote for.—Yours, etc., HUMPHREY. June 22. 1962.
