EUROPEAN TEACHERS
Reply Over Circular
(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL. June 21. Teachers of non-European origin were not prohibited from New Zealand, the Sous Wand Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools' Board was told tonight. The Education Department said it had been assured of that by the Department of Labour. The department was commenting on board criticism of a recent circular on recruiting teachers from the United States.
The circular, in giving Department of Labour requirements, said that "before considering an appointment boards should be satisfied that the applicant is wholly of European stock.” The Education Department replied tonight: “By now you will have received a further circular saying that the original one was open to misunderstanding, and making it clear that the entry of nonEuropean stock is not in fact prohibited and that applications may be considered on the merits of the individual case.”
