New Weather Satellite Launched Into Orbit

(N .ZJ’.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

CAPE CANAVERAL. June 20. The United States yesterday shot a hurricanehunting satellite into orbit 400 miles above the earth. The 2851 b satellite. Tiros V. was set on a course that will permit it to monitor weather over most of the world, including the Soviet Union. United Press International reported. Officials said that the satellite was taking excellent pictures.

Tiros V, using a set of sensitive cameras for eyes.

is circling the earth along an unusual path designed to extend its field of vision almost from the Arctic to the Antarctic circles —a far broader view than any of its four highly successful predecessors have had.

The Tiros family of weather satellites already have been credited with saving many lives and enormous property losses from hurricanes.

Yesterday's shot was timed to coincide with the beginning of the new Atlantic hurricane season, which usually reaches its peak about late August or September.
