CHANCELLOR IN BERLIN
Call To East Germans
(N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copi/rtoht) WEST BERLIN. June 18
The West German Chancellor (Dr Konrad Adenauer) yesterday called on East Germans "to stay true to their longing for freedom and reunification.” The Chancellor wa< addressing more than 200.000 West Berliners packed outside the City Hall to celebrate Unity Day—the anniversary of the abortive East German uprising on June 17 1953.
Recalling that more than 3.000.000 people had tied from East Germany since 1953. leaving all behind them. Dr Adenauer said: ’Tn Germa* history this insatiable desire for freedom will be registered in golden letters.
"It is with horror that one has to ask oneself why all this has to happen in our time, a time in which millions of former colonial people have gained their freedom, a time in which the Soviet Union, too, has defended the right of selfdetermination of the nations "I think the whole world should turn with indignation and disgust against such methods as are now being employed by German Communists. supported by the power of the Soviet Union.”
Cyprus and E.E.C.— The President of of Cyprus (Archbishop Makarios) yesterday said that Britain’s entry into the European Common Market wnuld hurt his country’s exports.—Athens, June 18.
