VESSELS FROM OVERSEAS

1038 Visited N.Z. Last Year

More vessels entered New Zealand ports direct from overseas in 1961 than in the previous year—lo3B compared with 972. says the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). These vessels made 3652 calls at various ports while trading on the New Zealand coast, an increase on the 3124 calls made during 1960. Entrances of coastal vessels at 10.274 remained practically unchanged from the previous year’s total. Arrivals of vessels direct from overseas were as usual concentrated on the ports of Auckland. Wellington, and Lyttelton, but the ports of final departure from New Zealand were more widely distributed, with Auckland, Tauranga. and Wellington recording the greatest number of departures. The 3,129.000 tons of cargo handled at New Zealand ports during the first three months of 1962 showed a decrease of 41,000 tons from the amount handled in the same period in 1961.

A substantia] drop in inwards overseas cargo of 212,000 tons was partially offset by increases in outwards overseas cargo of 121,000 tons, inwards coastal cargo of 35,000 tons, and outwards coastal cargo of 15,000 tons.
