FIREWOOD FOR THE AGED
Timber Salvaged From Old Houses
A team of voluntary helpers will begin work today at the comer of Madras and Armagh streets, where a twostorey house is being demolished. to salvage timber to be used as firewood by elderly citizens. The house is the first of several from which a salvage contractor. Mr K. Duffield, has offered wood. The timber would have been dumped along with rubble from the house in order to clear the section, but Mr F. J. Helena, who was invited by Mr Duffield to help himself to firewood, thought it a pity to waste the rest, and suggested that it be given to old persons.
Mr Duffield agreed, and offered timber from several houses and from buildings that he had dismantled on the pier at New Brighton. Mr Helem approached friends and organisations for assistance and was offered help, including trucks, a circular saw, refreshments and, just in case, some first aid kits. A Bible class group from Woolston offered to bring its own truck.
Mr Helem approached several charitable organisations for the names of elderly persons to whom the timber could be delivered. He has received 36 names from three organisations.
’’People wanting to give a hand are welcome to come along to the site of the house.” said Mr Helem.
