Golf U.S. OPEN TITLE
Palmer The Favourite (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) OAKMONT (Pennsyvania), June 14 The champion. Arnold Palmer, is a 5-1 favourite in the sixtysecond United States open golf championship, which will begin today. However, no-one will be trying harder to win than the South African, Gary Player. 'When I started out as a professional golfer. I set as my goal winning the British open, and your masters and open championships.*’ Player said today. “If and when I win the United States open I’ll feel I’ve achieved what I set out to do." There are 150 starters for the tournament to be held for the fourth time at Oakmont. Rain yesterday forced officials to close the course, preventing open contestants from having a final practice round. The tournament lost one of its "name’* players when Dow Finsterwald withdrew and flew to Ohio because of the death of his father.
