Sportsman’s Notebook Universities 'Rugby Match Next Week
\\ t hat are possibly the strongest Rugby club teams in the South Island will meet at Rugby Park next Wednesday when Canterbury University plays Otago University in the annual fixture for the Straker Smith Cup. The teams are leading their respective senior competi-
tions. and so far are unbeaten. The large number of representative players in the teams almost places the game in the category of an interprovincial match
First played in 1883 the annua! game for many years was dominated by Otage University but in the last s:x years Canterbury University has won. and often by big margins. However, this year Otago University is reported to have its strongest team for some years. The games between the two universities are always fast and open. The match in 1958, won by Canterbury 2623. was regarded by those watching as the finest game seen in Canterbury for many years. Last year Canterbury won 16-8 at Carisbrook The game was the curtain-raiser to the France-Otago match Dennis Lalanne, the French Rugby critic, said that the game was one of the best he saw while touring New Zealand with the French team. Canterbury, with the wealth of talent and experience that it can call on. will field a team almost up to representative standard. The All Black, R C. Moreton should be available for the match, and his meeting with the 1960 All Black. E Kirton and K Eglinton. and in the forwards. K Nelson. B Cooke, M. Meikle and J. C Lindsay
A. J. Stewart, of Canterbury, and Nelson were both included in the final All Black trials earlier this year and their duel in the lineouts should be a feature of the match. * * ¥ Rugby Come-Back The New Zealand cricketer. G. T Dowling. has made a come-back to Rugby this season. Before he began to concentrate on cricket. Dowling was a very promising centre in the Christchurch senior team and was a potential Canterbury representative Now he is playing for the Christchurch A team in the junior grade and is showing excellent form. As can be expected from one who is an outstanding fieldsman in any position. Dowling, who is playing a’ full-back, has impressed with his impeccable handling and perfect sense of position. ¥ ¥ ¥ Race Training A race training week for Canterbury skiers will be
