Speedboat Club's Good Season

r pHE recent speedboat season was one of the most successful for many years for the New Brighton Power Boat Club. R. Pratrley 'Downbeat) broke the New Zealand' B class outboard re- i cord,. J. Keig (Moonshot) broke the Australian and New Zealand C class outboard records and also held the D and E class records ■ until his time was broken by J. Andrews (Mandrake) in a run at Lake Kanieri. , Andrew’s is a member of the New Brighton club as well as the Lake Kanieri club. J. Keig also captured the New Zealand and Australian B class V-bottom record in Ting-a-ling. P. Calvert set a New’ Zealand 75 cu.in. V- . bottom record in Susie Too. A. Johnson 'Atom XI) w’on the New Zealand 75 cu. in. championship held at Wellington and also the Siuth Island title held at Waihao Box.

From the speed point of v.ew, the club's season ended last month on a promising note when during the last kilometre trial day G. Calder recorded a speed of 74.56 miles an hour in his 75 cu. in. hydro craft, Vamoose. The New Zealand record for this class is 78.974 miles an hour, and Calder showed that Vamoose could break this record next season. Biggest The New Brighton club, the biggest in New Zealand with a register of 115 craft, also gained substantially in membership during the season, the increase in members driving C class boats being especially welcome. Club members were prominent at regattas on the South Island circuit. At the Lake Kanieri Easter regatta 26 out of 53 boats were from the New Brighton club. The club also supported the newly-formed Lake lanthe Boat and Aquatic Club and assisted to make the first championship regatta ever staged by the Lake Ellesmere club a most successful one.

With 10 craft in the C class races at the last few club racing days of the season, and new skiffs, runabouts and racing boats under construction, the outlook for next season appears most promising. The club has plans to build a pavilion at Lake Forsyth and a proposal from the Otago Power Boat Club to stage a special championship regatta at Lake Forsyth for the best of South Island boats is to come before the annual conference of the South Island Speedboat Association.
