SLOW PUBLIC RESPONSE

Driving Licences, Registrations

The public response to appeals to be early with vehicle registrations and driving licence renewals has not been as good as was expected. There are still in Christchurch 22,000 licences to be renewed and more than 60.000 vehicles to be registered before the end of June It has become almost customary for owners and drivers in the city to leave things to the last minute. By Thursday the total number of vehicles registered was 6408. and about 3600 driving licences had been renewed The City Council traffic superintendent (Mr J. T. Thomas) said that a better response by the public in renewing licences would save a lot of last-minute trouble for staff and public alike later in the month. The total number of vehicles registered in Christchurch and suburban post offices yesterday was 1708. Of these 293 were registered by post.
