GEOLOGICAL MAPS
Five Nearing Publication
At least three of the South Island maps in the 1:250.000 (four miles to the inch) geological series should be published this year, the Christchurch regional geologist (Dr R. P. Suggate) said yesterday. Two others should appear early next year. The five sheets nearing publication were Nos. 15 (Buller). 16 (Kaikoura). 18 <Hurunui>, 22 (Wakatipu). and 23 (Oama.ru). All were in the drawing stage. Sheets 14 (Marlborough Sounds) and 24 (Invercargill) were in an advanced state of compilation. Dr. Suggate said. Nos. 17 (Hokitika), 19 (Haast). 20 (Mount Cook), and 26 (Stewart Island) were being compiled, and sheets 13 (Golden Bay) and 21 (Christchurch) were already published, leaving No. 25 (Dunedin) as the only South Island sheet for which revision of the geology had net yet started. “Although the rate of publication w’ill have to be speeded up if we are to reach our target of publishing the whole series by the end of, 1964. the work is sufficiently advanced for us to hope that we shall still do so,” said Dr. Suggate.
