Campaign In Buller Begins Next Week

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 8. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash) will fire the first shots in the Buller by-election campaign at a meeting in Westport on Monday night. He will also hold meetings in Murchison and Motueka on Tuesday before returning to Wellington on Wednesday.

The Government will enter the campaign a week later, on June 18. with a meeting in Motueka, at which the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys) will speak.

The poll will be held on July 7.

The Labour candidate is Captain W. E. Rowling and the National nominee, Mr E. King. Mr P. H. Matthews, political leader of the Social Credit League, is also standing.

Both the major parties will send leading speakers to Buller, where political organisers from Wellington have, this week, been busy preparing their campaign.

The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake), will wind up the Government campaign with speeches in Westport and Motueka on July 4 and 5 The Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton), the AttorneyGeneral (Mr Hanan> and the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) will also support Mr King during the campaign. To avoid interference with parliamentary duties. the Ministers’ meetings have been arranged on Mondays, Fridays. and Saturdays. For the Labour Party, :1s financial spokesman. Mr Nordmeyer, will hold at least five meetings between June 25 and July 3—at Takaka, Motueka, Wakefield. Westport and Murchison Other Opposition speakers include the new deputyleader (Mr D. Hacketn. Mr J. Mathison (Avon* Mr H. Watt (Oaehunga). Mr N. V. Douglas (Auckland Central', and Mr S. A. Whitehead (Nelson). With its earlier start in campaignina and greater use of top Parliamentarians, the Labour Party is apparently determined to preserve and. if possible, improve its 1960 Buller majority of 1546 The National Party is not taking the by-election lightly. “We're keen to get back as much as possible of that Waitaki by-election swing.” said its director (Mr R. Wilson) tonight.
