Hong Kong Refugees

Sir, —While I sympathise with the plight of the Hong Kong refugees who have fled from the terrors of Communism, I feel that the problem is one that should be solved by the Chinese people themselves by removing the cause of the trouble, namely their Communist overlords. I do not believe that we should lower our immigration barriers to admit these people as immigrants. In fact, we aiiould beware lest these unfortunate Chinese are used , as the thin edge of a wedge to force ever-increasing numbers of Asians upon us until our British culture is swamped by the sheer weight of Asian numbers. Let us refuse an Asian destiny, and by opposing any increase in Asian immigration quotas help to keep New Zealand British.—Yours, etc.. B. B. THOMPSON. June 7. 1962.

Sir, —The patient flinchesthe diagnosis is confirmed. My thanks to Judith Tait for this proof; to "N.Z.” and other thinkers for support. My children are limited to the number I can support. A common interference with nature, certainly, but justified in the circumstances. Certain aspects of American policy seem to have their origin outside that country. Let those who favour C.0.R.5.0. and other schemes of this kind inquire closely

into this origin. The heart is useful, but the head is a better thinking organ. Perhaps "Rainbow and Love” is right in his natural excess population theory. Who knows?—Yours, etc., Z. • June 7. 1962.
